Senior Train Travel Advice

The train is an easy and convenient way to get around, especially with the help of station assistants who can guide you with your journey. Traveling can become more difficult as you get older, especially if you are unable to drive a car. But this shouldn’t stop you getting out and about or enjoying a day out with the grand kids.

Which train ticket is best for me?

The National Rail service offers a Senior Railcard for anyone over the age of 60. However, this discount applies to certain types of tickets and unfortunately the Eurostar is not included! But, the Senior Railcard does provides you with a 1/3 off train fares for the following ticket types: First Class Anytime, Off Peak and Advance fares. The Senior Railcard costs £30 for one year or £70 for 3 years, a great option for frequent travellers.

Travel tip: Remember to carry your senior railcard with you when travelling as you’ll have to show it together with your travel ticket.

But, if you don’t travel often or if the grandkids have turned up unexpectedly, then it may be more cost savvy to purchase a day ticket such as the c2c Senior Rover deal. A ticket such as this allows you to travel on our route for just £5, or £9 if you head in to London, a cheaper option for a spur of the moment outing. You can jump on and off the c2c stops as you please, giving you the chance to explore towns you wouldn’t have thought to before.

Travel tip: Have your ID ready (passport or driver’s license will do) when purchasing a Senior Rover ticket and don’t be offended if you are asked to show it, it means you look young!

Tesco points can be used to purchase an annual senior railcard. £15 of points can be exchanged for a £30 card. If not haven't enough points, there are usually discount codes online. Typically with £3 off. An online 3 year one offers a great discount too. Check with your local council, some still offer discounts cards.

I've had a senior card for many years, only make two or three long journeys a year but still pays to have it.

If you are travelling as a couple the two together rail card is more economical as you only purchase one rail card instead of two and still get the same discounts.
