In response to the review submitted by anthony vose, I can say that First Utility has joined the Warm Home Discount Scheme. I transferred to them at the end of October 14 and completed the WHDS application. Within two weeks of doing that I received an email from First Utility confirming that I was illegible for the scheme and advising me that I would receive £136 rebate at the end of March 15. I submit my meter readings (dual fuel) via text or their website and, so far, have not had any problems. The bills have shown on the website within the week. I was being charged £83 per month by Scottish Power. My direct debit with First Utility is £70 and I'm now over £100 in credit already :). It was a no-brainer !

About 3 years now and I find them very good the first year I overpaid 145 GBP and I received a refund straight away, I must agree if ever I need any info they do not reply to my emails and I have never been able to talk to anybody on the phone but keeping track of my usage and bills is very good online.

I cannot recommend this company I left them after 12 months, why? The admin and billing sections are shambolic, one hand does not know what the other is doing, and often the claimed savings fail to materialise! Poorer pensioners and those on low income need to be particularly aware of something not shown on price comparison sites, (and I keep pointing this out ,but with little sign so far of success) what is it? The warm home discount worth £135 or £140 per year is only available to customers of the big six power companies. So for example if you are told you can save say £50 per year by switching from one of the big six to one of the smaller companies like First Utility ,then if you would qualify for the W.H.D. scheme you would actually be £ 85-£90 per year worse off. Please take this up with price comparison sites.

I joined First Utility approx 2 years ago on the recommendation of one of those best deal sites, but it was a case of out of the frying pan and into the fire, so I switched back to the devil I knew, even though I had had a problem with them which had made me switch to First Utility in the first place.

This review is more of a cautionary tale as I have been hearing that their customer service has vastly improved, but from what I have been reading on here that is obviously not the case.

Despite extensive attempts to contact them, as I had a teething problem with their service, I found it impossible to get a response from them, despite saying I would be cancelling my newly opened account if they did not respond, they didn't and nearly two years later their customer service seems to be every bit as bad.

The discounts are simply not worth the effort!

Have been with FU since July 14 as soon as July 15 is here I'm gone! I pay £86.00 for dual fuel send my meter readings each month & have to wait till Dec before I can view a bill. They aren't in a hurry to answer emails & try to phone, you are told there is a 20 minute queue, strange there was no queue when I joined up!
  Appalling customer service

Don't be fooled by the supposed lower prices. Any savings are more than negated by the terrible customer services. I had a faulty gas meter which gave wildly inaccurate readings and I was charged hundreds of pounds per month instead of tens of pounds. Although the company have verbally accepted the overcharging I have not received any refund or calculation after 6 months of regular telephoning, emailing and letter writing. I have now put my case into the hands of the Energy Ombudsman. Do not sign up with 1st Utility.

Very Poor Response from First Utility

I changed to them due to false advise from Uswitch & money matters comparison sites, hopeless. I changed in Sept. Got a welcome email then your 2 weeks cooling off, then we have set up your account. From that date I cannot contact will not respond to emails other than automated reply - we will reply in 5/7 days, never do. Then if phoning it takes over an hour, and then the goon on the phone knows nothing and nothing is done. But they did manage to extract £80.00 pounds from my acc. Have tried to get the ombudsman to investigate, but too over payed to get off arse, saying it will take up to 12 weeks to get answers.

I have asked on more than one occasion to let me know if my revised gas and electricity consumption with Scottish Power - (the comparison company which introduced me to First Utility, had got in wrong) - and I have had no response from First Utility so far, except to tell me that my two week period to cancel had expired (31st October 2014)... Well, I still have had no response to anything from the First Utility team.

This company makes every effort to advise and tell the truth on the best tarriff available to suit ones circumstances. Saved me £41.00 per month until 2017. Now I think that is great result.

Email communication is slow but telephone is terrible since there is always a long long queue. If they owe you money be prepared to wait at least 3 months.

When I went with first utility in November 2013, I gave them my meter reading it took me six months before I could get my account up on my PC when I did my meter readings had been put back to zero and I got bill for over £2000.00. When I rang customer service they told me it would be sorted. I have just got my October bill and it is still the same. I am very disappointed and upset with this company and wished I stop with southern electric.

Been with this supplier a little over 12 months, I particularly like that you can see what you have used and what it has cost on the online graphs when you check your usage, good tariffs to.

I joined this company in July. I have still to get a the cost of my first full month. I have rung on three occasions to be told "you are 46 on the list". When I did get through I got no explanation I could understand. The worst part I am tied for 18 months. Modern Britain!
