At 52 years old, lawyer Yvonne Hossack has been dubbed Britain’s Erin Brockovich after fighting tirelessly and selflessly against the closure of at least 80 care homes. This, according to a Mirror.co.uk report, most likely saved the lives of many vulnerable and frail elderly people, as the shock and trauma of closure could prove fatal.
Ms. Hossack worked free of charge to give a voice to those who did not have one in court. She forced councils to consider the effects of closure upon those who are most vulnerable, and in fact caused a reconsideration of elderly care in general.
She did so at great risk to herself, and lost her marriage of 23 years, her health, her financial well-being, and peace of mind. Nevertheless, Ms. Hossack is not showing any sign of giving up.
After winning a long court battle against accusations of “professional misconduct”, Yvonne is now aiming for the position of Independent MP for Stockton South, Co Durham.
She said: "I am not standing for me but to give the weak, sick and the dying a voice in the House of Commons and to try to get more rights for elderly people who face being kicked out of homes."
This brave mother of two will doubtlessly move mountains from such a powerful position.
