Recent research has shown that people over the age of 50 are 10 times more likely to remain unemployed than to be in a new job after two years of unemployment, says be careful.

The TUC warned that unless unemployed over 50s are given one-to-one support to help them back into employment they may never work again. The report said that a lot of help is given to young people in the area of employment but now the balance needs to be redressed in favour of older people.

Research shows that for every year that a man remains unemployed his risk of never working again is increased by 24.3 per cent. The organisation added that nearly half of unemployed people who are over 50 have been out of a job over over a year.

The report added that failure to find new jobs were pushing over 50s into early retirement and this had grave repercussions on the financial future and quality of life of over 50s. People so affected might be unable to build up provision for their pensions.

The proportion for unemployment of over 50s is 4.3 per cent lower than the overall rate of 7.8 per cent. It represents only 25 per cent of the rate of 17.3 per cent of those aged 18 to 24.
