UK Older People’s Day 2008 is on 1 October, but what is it all about?
It’s a celebration of how older people contribute to families and communities all around the country. It is recognition of
how older people should get the chance to lead full and active lives. Organisers are seeking to challenge the stereotypes and to promote positive images of older people.
Everyone should feel included in UK society.
Older People’s Day in 2008 has the theme of bringing generations together, and the benefits that can be found from getting to know people outside of your own age group.
Different age groups use the same pavements, road, shops, parks, buses and trains, yet tend to keep to their own group. Older People’s Day is about strengthening local communities and creating safer and more friendly neighbourhoods for everyone.
The banner ‘Full of Life’ is being used to promote the Day, with many organisations - charities, councils, faith groups – getting involved in organising events and activities in many places round the country. Full of Life celebrates the achievements, opportunities, and aspirations of older people and their continuing contribution to our society and economy.
The lives of older people can reach across the generations to help all age groups to live together – that’s worth celebrating.
