Two grandfathers take up karate

Two Townhill grandfathers have recently proved that age is indeed just a number. Richard Arnold, 61, and Ronnie Gibbins, 52, were inspired to take up Karate while watching their grandchildren practice the sport.

Although they admit some difficulty at first, the sprightly granddads also experienced many benefits from being physically active in this way.

Mr. Arnold said: "Compared to what we were all doing to socialise before, it is very healthy indeed. The exercise and stretching is much better than what a lot of people our age do."

The effect has been cumulative, as the initial group of three “mature” karate participants grew to nine regulars. Clearly the pleasure is far outweighing the initial pain of getting used to the moves and stretches.

A report in This is South Wales noted that the group is now getting ready for their red belt grading.

The report also indicates that the sport has not only had an excellent effect upon the health of the older participants, but also on their social and mental well-being. The karate events are providing a good opportunity for family members to get together and socialise.

Mr. Gibbins and Mr. Arnold have found that karate provides a wonderful meeting between the generations.
