Walter Lowthorpe from North Norwich, is encouraging others in his age group who is sent a bowel testing kit to make sure they use it as it could save their lives. As he says he himself was
feeling "absolutely fine" before taking it.
The take-up of these tests is only 60 per cent. But it is a good time for Walter to speak out as it coincides with Bowel Cancer Awareness Month.
Over 60s are routinely sent a test and send off a sample. Results take only a few days to be returned.
If detected in time, a pre-cancerous or cancerous lump can be treated and a complete recovery is possible.
Walter's test is part of a cancer prevention programme at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.
Walter said: "If I hadn't taken that test I wouldn't be here today. That test saved my life and it could save a lot more - I can't believe some people do not take the opportunity to use it."
Within two weeks of the test, 18 months ago, Walter was given a biopsy and had his cancer and bowel removed, followed by eight chemotherapy sessions and follow up treatment.
The father and grandfather now has the all-clear and wants others to learn from his situation.
