Who’s afraid of driving at night? Well, apparently, quite a few of us!
A new survey suggests that over five million motorists in the UK have fears about driving in the dark.
A survey carried out by
Saga Motor Insurance – the over 50s insurer – says that twenty per cent of over 50s take their car out less in the winter to avoid driving in the dark. For drivers over the age of 70, the figure rises to nearly a third of drivers.
Nearly a quarter of over 50s admit to fearing for their own safety when driving at night, according to the research.
Twenty-five per cent of over 70s admit that they would rather spend out on a taxi than drive at night.
Executive chairman at Saga Group, Andrew Goodsell, said: “Our research shows the over 50s use their experience to adapt their driving to reflect conditions on the road and as you would expect have fewer accidents than other age groups.”
The results from the survey were announced at the same time as a new road safety campaign was launched. The campaign wants to raise drivers’ awareness of children, pedestrians and cyclists during the dark winter nights.
The THINK! Campaign urges children to wear bright, reflective clothing, with the slogan: “Be Bright, Be Seen”.
