There may have been a brief thaw in some areas of the country over the weekend, but freezing temperatures are likely to stay for a few days yet, and we’re only just at the start of winter.
The cold conditions have been a real problem for many people and sadly, eight people are known to have died in incidents relating to the weather. Michelle Mitchell, of Age UK, said of the deaths of two older people in Cumbria last week: “We are greatly saddened to hear of the death of these two older people in Cumbria and our thoughts and sympathies go out to their families.
“Tragic incidents like this are a reminder of how important it is to take extra care in these icy and cold conditions. If older people fall they are more susceptible to injury and can often struggle to get back on their feet.”
Charity Age UK has urged all people to be good neighbours during the difficult weather period, especially looking out for older people who live on their own. Offers of help with shopping, dog walking or collecting medicines could help prevent accidents, or literally be life-saving acts.
Ms Mitchell said: “When there is snow and ice we would advise people to only go outside in exceptional circumstances.”
