Savings to be made on energy costs in the home

The Guardian ran an article over the weekend giving advice on the best ways to save money on gas and electricity. It pointed out that many of those who miss out on the best deals are the elderly, so here’s a reminder of the best ways to make savings on energy bills.

If you have never changed suppliers going online to Energy Helpline will help reveal the best deals – if you’re not online, get a friend or relative to check the best supplier by typing in your postcode. Switching suppliers could save you over £300 a year.

Online tariffs tend to be the cheapest. For many older people this is a problem because they are not online, but in actual fact you only need an email address; after that you can still phone in with queries. Again, a friend or relative might be able to help you with online reading submission as it is very little bother.

Avoid cheques and pay by direct debit. This can give you up to 6 per cent discount.

Pre-payment tariffs will also cost you, so avoid these where you can.

Finally, don’t live in the past – switch to low-energy light bulbs which will be much cheaper in the long run.
