Yesterday saw a manifesto presented to political leaders what the over-50s would like to see. Amongst the key issues are a call for the shoring up of state pensions, taxation cuts, the elimination of elderly prejudice in the NHS and the BBC and getting rid of compulsory retirement rules. Other issues include binge drinking measures, more bobbies on the beat and zero tolerance to thuggery.
The Saga Manifesto has been determined after a poll of more than 14,000 over-50s from an online poll. It is a manifesto that politicians should take to heart as the poll revealed that almost two thirds of over 55s would be prepared to vote in the next general election. In comparison, only a fifth of those under 24 and a third of those aged between the late 20s and early 30s want to vote.
Emma Soames, of Saga Magazine, said: “Issues that concern the older generation are varied. They include meaty public policy issues like supporting family carers and making retirement more flexible so it becomes more akin to taking a stroll down to the beach rather than falling off a cliff.” She went on to add that the over 50s are an active force to be reckoned with as millions within this age group will be voting.
