Prince Philip celebrated his 90th birthday on 10 June and appears to be doing very well. However, in an interview broadcast on BBC1 two days previously, he announced that he has been reducing his own workload, before he reaches his "sell-by date".
The prince is notorious for being outspoken and blunt and this is no exception. "There is an ageism in this country, as everywhere and quite rightly so", he said, adding, "because I think you go downhill - physically, mentally and everything."
The Duke is involved in around 800 charities and organisations, so it is no wonder he is looking forward to "winding down" and enjoying himself. The Duke said: "I reckon I've done my bit, I want to enjoy myself for a bit now. With less responsibility, less rushing about, less preparation, less trying to think of something to say."
Prince Philip's son Prince Edward said that his father was as busy as ever. Prince Edward said: "He keeps on saying he's trying to slow down and take on less but I haven't seen much evidence of that, he seems to fill the gaps with lots of other things, which is fantastic."
Prince Edward added: "The fact he's still got that fascination and interest and energy is superb."
