South Lakeland Age UK threw a huge pre-royal-wedding party for over 50s to celebrate the event that took place on 29 April. The “Big Celebration” was held in the Coronation Hall, Ulverston.

All the tickets were sold out and the main hall was packed. Guests were treated to a buffet accompanied by 1930s, 40s and 50s music. Artists like Sue parish and Eileen Guppy performed, together with a set from Ulverston Victoria High School Swing Band.

Vickie Maddison, the project assistant for South Lakeland Age UK, felt that the celebration offered some reprieve from the harsh realities of spending and pension cuts. She said: “We wanted to mark the wedding with something, especially as it’s been a difficult time for everybody and for the over-50s...”

The point was to have a good time, and according to the guests, they certainly did. Brenda O’Connor, who attended with her sister and friend, mentioned how wonderful it was. She also said that everybody seemed to enjoy themselves.

Brenda O’Connor, of Dunlin Drive, Dalton, attended with her sister and friend.

According to a report in the North West Evening Mail, all the guests appeared happy to be there and happy for the event that was its inspiration.
