The Community Newswire recently reported of a charity’s effort to find and promote positive media representations of older people and issues related to the elderly. National charity Counsel and Care launched the Older People in the Media Awards 2010, and is now awaiting nominations.
The aim of the awards is to give recognition to those media institutions that portray older people, their contributions, and those who care for them in a positive light. All media are included in the awards, and anybody is allowed to nominate relevant examples from newspapers, magazines, television, radio, or the internet.
The seven categories in which the award can be won iclude the best portrayal of care and support, best advice for older people, and best portrayal of the positive contribution that older people make in society.
Each category will have a winner, with an overall winner also to be selected from these.
The chief executive of Counsel and Care, Stephen Burke, said: "This competition once again aims to highlight and celebrate the best examples of coverage of older people and their carers in the media.”
According to Mr Burke, the media is extremely important to promote the value of older people in society and politics, not only to improve their general image, but also to improve the services and policies that make their lives easier.
