A recent survey for a New Zealand website has revealed a new phenomenon among the over 50s: “regifting” or giving to someone else a present you’ve already received.
Now there’s a way to save money this festive season!
A survey conducted for website
grownups.co.nz showed that over 50s – the so-called baby boomer generation – have no problem with regifting.
Reasons for the practice can include having a duplicate of the time, having no room for it, or, rather more brutally, thinking it’s unfashionable, inappropriate or simply awful!
Co-founder of Grownups.co.uk, Richard Poole, said the survey showed that regifting was becoming more acceptable. He said: “There is nothing wrong with recycling gifts. You just have to make sure you don't regift a present to the person that gave it to you in the first place.”
Almost two-thirds of over 50s also said that they would be pulling out their fake Christmas trees once again this year, whereas only around one sixth said they would be buying a real tree.
These sensible saving techniques enable the over 50s to be generous when it comes to charity, however, with almost 30 per cent of respondents intending to donate more to charity at Christmas time.
