At one time, social networks were the province of younger people but now it seems increasing numbers of over 50s are becoming interested in sites such as Facebook and Twitter. According to the Pew Internet and American Life Project, the numbers of over 50s accessing social networking sites almost doubled in the last year, since summer 2009.

Over 50s often love to catch up with old friends and lost relatives and older people use social networking sites to keep in touch with family. Pew reports that seven out of ten people use social networks for reconnecting with past contacts.

Both career changes and retirement both may have caused many older people to lose touch with colleagues and friends. Social networks such as Facebook often facilitate reunions with lost friends and colleagues.

Older people also use social networking sites to have online discussions for example about chronic illnesses just as younger people do about their various problems in life and about their children. This is a valuable means of mutual support, which older people find extremely valuable.

Finally it may be said that interactive fun games such as Farmville which are relaxing and communicative are great pastimes especially for the bedridden and housebound.
