The Golden Oldies charity is joining forces with Age Concern in Cardiff and The Vale of Glamorgan to launch Goldies Cymru in South Wales, a series of musical events to engage the older population.

The charity was launched in Bath in 2007, running over 1,600 sessions a year in the west of England.

Founder Grenville Jones said: "Wales has the fastest growing elderly population and areas of need,"

Mr Jones added: "Our ethos is simple - it is to give people, some who may be isolated and lonely, events to look forward to."

At present, around 750 older people are helped in this way to enjoy their lives as the charity currently runs events on a weekly or monthly basis in over 50 locations in the west of England. The attendees take part in the sessions which include classic pop songs from the 50s to the 70s. The patron of the charity is Sir Cliff Richard so many of his songs feature too.

The initiative has been hugely successful with a great positive outcome as 90 per cent of attendees have felt improvements in their health and happiness level and community life has been greatly enhanced.

Goldies Cymru is due to be launched shortly at the Old Trelai Library at Ely in Cardiff.
