A recent study conducted by German researchers has shown that older people read faster on an iPad than “real books.” Despite the fact that most of these older people claim to prefer paper books as opposed to electronic reading devices, this did not seem to affect the outcome of the study.
The study was conducted in response to the general scepticism that people tend to show towards electronic books and reading devices. The German researchers wanted to find out if there were any good reasons to have such doubts.
One criticism against the iPad is that it causes some eye strain if the reader uses it over a long time. The research team, however, found that there was no substance to claims that any other reading device, including paper books, was any easier on the eyes.
The main advantage of the iPad over books and devices like the Kindle is that it helps the reader to process information more quickly.
Professor Dr Stephan Fussel, who led the team of researchers, said: “This study provides us with a scientific basis for dispelling the widespread misconception that reading from a screen has negative effects.”
According to a report in the Mail Online, volunteers were from various age groups. The older age groups, particularly, read faster using the iPad.
