Over 50s in Boston Lincolnshire are to be helped by four groups who have received funding from the Silver Spirit project.
The four groups are Boston Silver Spoon Bowmen Archery Club, Swineshead Strollers Health Walk Group, Kirton Walking Group and Age UK Boston. In total the groups received £874 in sports grants to fund over 50s sports activities.
Sarah Ferneyhough, physical activity manager at the Lincolnshire Sports Partnership said: “Silver Spirit provides a great opportunity for the older generation to get actively involved with the 2012 Games and run events inspired by the Olympics or Paralympics."
Older people are being encouraged to take up archery as the Bowmen were handed a cheque for £250 to purchase specialist archery equipment for this age group. The same amount was presented to the Swinehead Strollers who will each complete a marathon either walking, swimming, rowing or cycling 26.2 miles at their own pace. Kirton Walking Group will be able to organise a 25-mile Boston Torch Relay Health Walk from Swineshead to Old Leake, for all local health walk groups.
Local people with learning disabilities will be funded to make a special torch.
There will be mini Olympic events funded by money presented to Age UK and Age UK South Holland. The events will include floor basketball and new age kurling.
