To help older people in Norwich remain part of the community, pubs are providing them with a venue where they can feel welcome, meet each other, and socialise.
Age UK Norwich is at the head of the project, which involves pubs such as the Farmhouse and the Heartsease. Older people who visit these pubs have the opportunity to enjoy tea, coffee, meals, and other activities while meeting others and generally getting out into the community.
For the pubs involved, this means a community focus that serves to attract new customers and make them more vibrant.
The Farmhouse landlord, Simon Marsh, said: “It started off with them coming in for a cup of tea or coffee, which we did for £1 a go.”
The initial 11 people who visited the Farmhouse pub when the scheme started grew to 30. Mr Marsh said that some of the regular visitors are over 90.
The older people attracted in this way have become such a part of the pub community that they have become friends with the younger pub patrons.
The pub owners, landlords, and patrons are all in agreement that the scheme is a great way to get the community’s people involved in each other’s lives by sharing a fun time at the pub.
