Older women who frequent Marks and Spencer's clothing departments have expressed their displeasure at not finding styles that are appropriate to their age and figures.
Speaking up for her generation's fashion needs at the M&S AGM at the London Royal Festival Hall, 75-year-old widow Hilary Roodyn said: "I do feel that you are missing a trick. You are not catering for the over-60s. Demographically, we are growing and if you go on a cruise you’ll find a lot of us golden oldies wanting to wear pretty dresses. But we want to be covered up.”
Mrs Roodyn a retired sculptor added after the meeting: "Nobody’s going to have a bare midriff at our age - it would look ridiculous. Fashion is geared to the young customers and not us. We want to look as nice as we can – certainly not mutton dressed up as lamb.”
It seems that older female customers are not well catered for in the clothing department. Mrs Roodyn told sales executives that people are living longer and want to look good in their later years. Her friend Helen Garfield, who is 80 added that they like to "dress up quite modern but at the same time prefer to be comfortable with "nice cotton fabric". She too confirmed that they like to be covered up.
