The Help the Aged Leeds Abbey Dash was held on Sunday 23 November 2008. The race is a unique ten kilometre road race run in a wonderful atmosphere. Sponsorship from the race goes towards Help the Aged.
The Abbey Dash was created by Richard Witt, a member of the Abbey Runners club. First run on 14 December 1986 in aid of the mental health charity Mind, when Richard started to work for Help the Aged a year later, he took the race with him.
The money raised from the race makes a huge difference to the lives of older people, many of whom suffer from poverty, isolation and neglect. Every single penny raised from race sponsorship makes a firm and lasting difference to the lives of vulnerable older people. Runners can create their own web page to assist in gathering sponsors.
In 2008 the target was to raise £200,000, with proceeds funding a Help the Aged HandyVan in the Leeds and West Yorkshire area. These vans install security devices in the homes of isolated older people.
This year the men’s winner was Jean Nsaylsenga of Birchfield Harriers in 28 minutes 16 seconds, and the women’s winner was Sarah Willamott of Blackburn Harriers in 34 minutes 28 seconds.
