Publican Carol McCormack-Hole is so supportive of Devon council's new scheme for recruiting volunteer snow wardens to assist with dire winter conditions that she has said that more wardens are urgently needed.
The new snow warden scheme has given the volunteers up to five tonnes of salt to clear unsalted roads and footpaths in Devon.
Ms McCormack-Hole said: "As a landlady I meet all kinds of people, and I hear at first hand their concerns about a repeat of last winter conditions.
We need more snow wardens, and as a director of the Senior Council for Devon, the voice of the over-50s, I know that falls and resultant injuries become more common in winter, placing greater stress on individuals and health services.
The Senior Council is working with others on ways of reducing falls, and anything we can do to reduce the risks has to be a good thing."
Ms McCormack-Hole said that householders should take it upon themselves to clear snow and ice from outside their homes and not worry about being sued by passers by, as long as they cleared the area carefully. Individuals, she said, had a responsibility to keep themselves safe while walking on snow and ice.
