Liverpool City Council is to make special home improvement loans available to over 60s and disabled people.
The new loan is called the Houseproud loan and is designed to improve quality of life for people who need it most.
These loans may be taken out from £3000 to up to 55 per cent of the current value of the property, and are available to over 60s or anyone who has a disabled person living in the household. They do not have to be repaid during the person's lifetime.
Improvements that can be funded in this way include electrical rewiring, a new bathroom, central heating, new doors and replacement windows, guttering and adaptations necessary for disabled people.
Help is also available from the City Council to access tradesmen and checking the completed work.
Councillor Anne O'Byrne said: "Many older homeowners, or households that include a disabled person, have a real need to repair, improve or adapt their living space. But it can be a daunting task, especially at a time when people are having to tighten their purse strings."
Ms O'Byrne added that this was a valuable scheme to enable over 60s and disabled people access much-needed improvements to their homes.
