Two charities for older people are to merge to create a new powerful charity for the elderly.
Help the Aged and Age Concern are coming together in 2009, and hope to bring a new, exciting charity into being. The two organisations hope that by combining the strengths of the two charities they
will create a single stronger organisation which will enable the new entity to deliver even more for older people, including high services, bringing about positive change and championing the needs of older people.
The chief executive of the new charity will be Tom Wright, CBE, taking up his role in early 2009. He said: “I want to share in the creation of a charity that delivers outstanding products and services, which secure positive change and enrich older people’s lives. It’s a compelling vision that deserves to succeed especially in these challenging times.”
Local branches of Age Concern and Help the Aged in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will also be brought together to create a single charity in each of those countries.
It is hoped that the new charity will get off the ground in spring 2009, but no dramatic changes are planned to either charity before then, with current work continuing over the festive season and into the New Year.
