After almost 20 years of running a social club for over-60s, Bette Redmile has decided to call it a day. She began the Fourth Generation Group in Scunthorpe in 1993, also the European Year Of The Elderly and Solidarity Between Generations.
Ms Redmile began the club after losing her husband in 1992. Her loneliness inspired her to begin the club as a means of helping both herself others in need of companionship.
She advertised in the Scunthorpe Telegraph, which put her on the way to running the club for 30 to 40 people.
According to a This is Scunthorpe report, activities at the club included games such as bingo, day trips, and talks on relevant topics by groups such as social services, the police, and fire service.
Ms Redmile felt that she reached her goal and that she made a big impact on the community. She said: "I'd like to think I've helped a lot of people and made a difference to people's lives – I'd like to think that I've given people the chance to make friends.”
Councillor Pauline Carlile confirmed the vital role the club and others like it played in the community. Bette Redmile will be missed by those whose lives she touched, but her legacy will remain.
