Droitwich Spa is forward thinking for its older population in setting up fun exercise classes called Extend at two local community centres.

Extend has been specially designed for over 60s and those with physical challenges. The exercise classes are set to music and based on having fun, relaxation and sociability, with specially trained instructors.

Meanwhile, there is a pot of government funding for Exercise Initiatives for the over 60s, called Active at 60. This will benefit community groups in 30 areas across the UK. The idea is to encourage over 60s and those approaching retirement to keep active and therefore fit and healthy.

The project to help older people through their communities is part of the Government'S plans to build a Big Society in which local communities, organisations and voluntary groups can enable people to play a more major role in their communities.

Norfolk is one of the counties that will benefit greatly as over £42,000 will be awarded in grants through the Norfolk Community Foundation.

Graham Tuttle, Director of the Norfolk Community Foundation said that retirement can be a difficult time for older people who are then most at risk from social isolation and poor health. The new initiative, he said, was set up to address these issues for older people.
