In a world where the costs of living continue to rise and strain even the most fortunate among us, older people in the UK are receiving a break in the form of a free TV licence. TV Licensing and Age UK are working together to help people benefit from these licences from their 75th birthday.
According to a report in the Dorset Echo, 130 people in Dorset are due to reach this age within the next 12 months. These people are currently short-term TV licence holders.
In Bournemouth, more than 14,000 people already benefit from free TV licences, while there are nearly four million people across the UK who are eligible for the concession.
Even those who live on the same property as those over 75 will benefit, as all equipment at the premises is covered by the free licence.
This brings welcome relief to older people, who have become increasingly challenged to live on fixed incomes in a world where the costs of even basic necessities continue to rise.
Charity Director for Age UK, Michelle Mitchell, said: “The free over-75s’ licence is a valuable concession, which offers older people the chance to have a little extra to put towards other bills.”
