Ensure you don't suffer from the cold

The UK is currently experiencing a very cold spell with temperatures reaching as low as minus 10 degrees. With such dramatic drops, it is vital that the elderly are protected. The government allows Winter Fuel Payments for anyone aged 60 and over, which amounts to up to £300.

There are also grants of up to £2500 available to help upgrade the home to make it more energy efficient and these can be obtained through an energy grant from Warm Front in England, Warm Deal in Scotland and HEES and HEES Plus in Wales. British Gas Home Energy Care can offer help to those who are elderly and struggling. British Gas can also advise if you are eligible for free insulation. If you are not sure what you may be entitled to, then visit www.entitledto.co.uk.

To combat the cold:

  • Take plenty of hot foods and drinks for warmth and energy
  • Keep active, although avoid going outside
  • Layer up with plenty of clothes and start with thermal underwear if possible
  • An electric blanket or (not and) a hot water bottle will take the chill off going to bed and keep a flask of hot tea or chocolate by the bed
  • If the temperature falls below 16 degrees, there is more likelihood of hyperthermia, stroke or heart attack
  • Cold air on the face at night increases the blood pressure and therefore, close the window during extreme cold
