Sick, elderly people are still being forced to sell their homes and deplete their life savings in order to fund their care. However, this needs urgently to be addressed as it is the responsibility of the NHS to pick up the bill.
All over the country, the NHS is breaking and misapplying national standards that have been laid down by the Department of Health, according to a report in MoneyMail.
However, chances of paid care for the sick and elderly vary according to where in the UK they happen to live. The chances of being funded are ten times greater in areas such as Shropshire than others such as Birmingham and Milton Keynes, admits the Government.
Yesterday, there were further revelations in the Daily Mail that authorities such as Liverpool, Hull and Lambeth are much more likely to provide funding for residential care than Croydon, Poole and Wokingham.
All this inequity exists despite the fact that the law clearly states that if the need for care for an elderly person is due to severe ill health the NHS is obliged to fund that care. This includes all costs relating to nursing, accommodation, and personal care.
In reality, relatives of the frail and elderly are fighting daily battles to get their loved ones assessed for funding for care.
