A couple of weeks ago she was in the news for being the
oldest living artist ever to enter the top 20 album chart. Now, Dame Vera Lynn has gone on to even higher things!
The 92-year-old has hit the top of the album chart with We'll Meet Again -
The Very Best of Vera Lynn, and therefore becomes the oldest living artist ever to top the UK album chart - taking the title from Bob Dylan. In doing so she beat off competition from the Arctic Monkeys, Kings of Leon, and even the re-mastered, re-released CD collection of The Beatles.
It was in the Second World War that Vera Lynn became famous as the forces’ sweetheart by keeping up the spirits of millions of troops with her singing and entertainment.
The
BBC quoted Dame Vera as saying that she would "never have dreamt" that the album would have got into the charts again - and she was amazed it had reached number one.
"But there you go, you never know what's round the corner do you?" she said.
In France celebrating Dame Vera said that her daughter was "more excited" about the news than she was.
In spite of the album's success, Dame Vera said that her singing days were "well behind her" and did not plan to enter the recording studio again.
