As winter sets in many
older people may find it difficult to afford to put on their heating in these times of recession. A cheaper option is that old electric blanket costing only 1p a an hour to run.
But it is essential to have it checked or to replace it as it may be dangerous and cause a fire.
In fact most of the 5000 fires annually are caused by blankets over 10 years old.
For this reason, Cardiff Trading Standards will check electric blankets for free for the
over 60s. They advise people to watch out for worn or frayed fabric, scorch marks, a damaged plug or lead or any loose connections. And if the symbol on the blanket is the old round BEAB symbol it is certainly old and may need replacing.
The Cardiff Council Executive Member for Communities, Housing and Social Justice Judith Woodman said: “Home safety is of utmost importance and I urge all local residents
over the age of 60 to take advantage of this free service. Many people rely on electric blankets for warmth and it is important to have your blanket checked by a qualified person to ensure it is still safe to use."
