The Celebrating Age Festival at the SavaCentre in Colliers Wood provided older residents with the opportunity to celebrate with dancing moves from all over the world. Belly dancing was just one of the ways in which mature adulthood was celebrated in this festival.
At the launch of the event on 3 June, community groups for over-50s in the borough provided performers showing off dance steps from across the world. Sue Tickner, the organiser of the event, was very enthusiastic about everyone’s participation.
In a report by Your Local Guardian, she said: “We always have a lot of fun and want to encourage as many of our older residents as possible to join in the celebration.”
According to Ms. Tickner, the festival highlights “the fact that getting older is something that should be enjoyed.” For many getting older will mean freedom from responsibilities like work and raising children.
There will be more free time for new interests, fresh skills, and making new friends. Festivals such as Celebrating Age provided plenty of opportunities for this.
Guests at the festival included people from Indian, African-Caribbean, and Chinese community groups. Dance enthusiasts from Merton and Morden Guild, as well as Age Concern’s belly dancing groups attended the festival and showed off their skills.
