Catholic Bishops Call for Better Care

Recent media and government reports regarding a basic lack of care to older persons have spurred bishops to retaliate with a report of their own. As representatives of the Catholic Church in particular and the caring of Christ in general, these spiritual leaders have spoken out in strong terms against the neglect.

The recent media have been filled with reports on the lack of care provided to older people living in care facilities. This extended not only to the lack of basic compassion and general attitude, but even to fundamental needs such as food and water.

A UK government report has indicated that 14% of nursing homes don’t provide adequate food and water to their residents. As a result, the bishops of England and Wales have called for a “culture of care which cherishes life from its beginning to its natural end.”

In the same spirit, Archbishop Peter Smith said that the way in which we value and care for people constitutes a mirror for us, not only as a society, but also as individuals.

According to the Catholic World News, Archbishop Smith called for more cooperation between Catholic care professionals and the UK government to ensure that older people are honoured for the many contributions they made and still make to society.
