Seventy-two-year-old Ian McMean has become the oldest dad in the UK after his wife, Claire, 30 years his junior gave birth to a baby girl named Kate at Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle.

Ian has two adult sons, over 40, from his previous marriage, and a seven-year-old son Kit with his wife.

Says Ian: "It's a bit like beauty and the beast at the moment. I am holding Kate, and she is so tiny. Claire's labour lasted all of 40 minutes, it was somewhat of a rush. I went to park the car at the hospital and when I returned the baby had arrived."

The couple are ecstatic to have a baby girl. When they met, Claire was only 17 while Ian was 46. They are both internationally renowned artists with studios in New York, California and Toronto.

Ian says that he can't act like an "old codger".

He added: "I have a family to support. I am going to have to work harder than ever now to make sure they are provided for. I already work for around 70 hours a week. I don't want people to think of me as being irresponsible, but I very much doubt I will live until I'm 120. If anything happens to me then Claire will have the comfort of a family around her."
