A 71-year-old pensioner Anne Timson has made headlines by her bravery in foiling a gang of six robbers, three armed with sledgehammers, who were about to grab jewellery from a store in Northampton. Three accomplices were ready on their getaway scooters to take the booty.

Ms Timson decided to take action fuelled, she said, by her motherly instincts. A video clip which was broadcast worldwide shows her swinging her bag at the culprits which resulted in one falling to the ground and then being detained by passersby.

The brave pensioner told the Northampton Chronicle and Echo: "I was standing talking with a woman when I heard a commotion and I looked across and saw six young men on scooters. At first I thought one of them was being set upon by three others. I was not going to stand by and watch somebody take a beating or worse, so I tried to intervene."

She added that too many people seemed in shock and not doing anything.

Suzette Davenport, Deputy Chief Constable of Northamptonshire Police who met and thanked Anne Timson commended the town's heroine. She said: "She demonstrated true community spirit in wanting to help others, but we should acknowledge that this did involve a clear element of risk."
