To address serious health problems faced by persons over 55, the Blackburn Rovers Community Trust project has so far reached more than a thousand older people. Conditions that have been addressed in this initiative include cardiovascular disease, stroke, obesity, isolation and depression.

The project includes an Active 8 programme that offers weekly sport and social activities, such as dancing, walking, and even IT courses.

The scheme includes 30 clubs and receives joint funding from the Football Foundation and Sport Relief. It was developed by the Premier League, Football League Trust and Age UK.

Jamie Hopwood, the head of community sport and health engagement for the trust, said: “There’s a really friendly, supportive atmosphere and anyone interested in coming along will certainly be made to feel very welcome.”

According to the Lancashire Telegraph, those who benefit from the project, feel the same way. “Jack’s Walker” Betty Walton, for example, is a triple heart bypass recipient who uses the programme to help maintain the level of fitness she needs to stay healthy.

In this way, the project serves the dual purpose of providing company for people who wish to keep fit in the process as well. The project serves as an example for those who believe that age is no determinant for quality of life or health.
