A programme organised by Age UK to promote friendship and well-being among older people now includes a telephone service called "Call in Time".
The new friendship service aims to keep lonely, older people in touch with the outside world and enjoy having a friendly voice to talk to. Part of the service includes trained volunteers making weekly half-hour phone calls to older people who can speak in a safe and relaxed environment, about topics that are relevant to them in their daily lives, for example grandchildren and hobbies.
Chief Executive at Age UK Croydon Stuart Routledge said: "Reducing loneliness and isolation amongst older people in our community is central to our work, so we are delighted to be able to reach out to even more people living in Croydon through our partnership with Age UK."
Mr Routledge is inviting older people living in the Croydon area who are interested in this service or who know someone who is to get in touch for further details.
Information about the Call in Time service can be obtained by calling Age UK on 0844 225 0320 or emailing callintime@ageuk.org.uk.
However, it can certainly not be assumed that all or most older people are lonely and need this service, but it will certainly be a lifeline for those who do.
