Connie Baker recently made senior history by being the oldest person, at 102 years old, to join a pub lunch event. The lunch initiative was started by Community Impact Bucks under contract by Buckinghamshire County Council, with the purpose of reducing social exclusion for over 50s in rural areas.
Mrs Baker was one of 34 senior citizens to join the lunch at the Black Horse pub in Lacey Green. The coordinator of the event, Llew Monger, said: “We had a great turnout and it was a terrific lunch. Mrs Baker was very bouncy and she loved it.”
According to a report in This Is Local London, the usual turnout includes people between 65 and 75 years old. Mr Monger said that they “never thought about it being for the over 100s.”
The extent of social isolation that seniors experience becomes evident during the lunch events. At one event, two women who lived on the same street for years met each other for the first time.
Others enjoy the events as an alternative to the lack of social activity in their immediate environment. The lunches are an opportunity to meet new friends who will remain friends because they live in close proximity.
The Lacey Green lunch was the tenth since the start of the initiative.
