Electricity and gas companies are always touting for our business and it is often very confusing about which way to turn and whether to stay or change.

E.ON has come up with a solution that might well prove enticing for the over 60s. Its “StayWarm” package claims to offer peace of mind, by fixing your energy prices for 12 months when you pay by direct debit.

StayWarm prices are based on the number of people living in a home and the number of bedrooms in the property. After the first year’s payments, energy consumption is reviewed and the new price stays in place for a further 12 months. E.ON guarantee that each 12-month period will see prices maintained at the same level throughout the time.

The key point about the StayWarm package is that it requires someone of over 60 years of age to be living in the home.

Other requirements are that the property must have three bedrooms or less, four people or fewer must be living in the property, you pay by direct debit, and you take both gas and electricity from E.ON.

The other good news about StayWarm is that eligible customers will be referred to the Government’s Warm Front scheme which gives them free energy advice and grants for insulation and other heating measures.

E.ON says it is committed to helping people get the best value from energy and reduce carbon output. To back up its commitment, E.ON's Website contains many tips for improving energy efficiency in the home.

Here are a few examples:

1. Turning central heating down by 1°C could save 10%
2. Don’t leave items such as TVs, DVD players or computers on standby
3. Don’t dry clothes on a radiator – it makes your boiler use more power
4. Only boil the amount of water you need when boiling a kettle
5. Use low energy light bulbs which last 15 times longer and cost 75% less than old-style bulbs
