Many people see eating out as a luxury that they can only afford at the beginning of the month or when they get a bonus. Particularly during these economic times, it is considered an unnecessary luxury. When you’re a senior citizen, a little know-how can get you dinners out at a fraction of their normal price.
Many restaurants offer coupons or regular money saving options for senior citizens. Often, however, these discounts are only offered during certain times of the week, so it is advised to check before making reservations.
Restaurants also offer senior discounts or menus on demand. These are not advertised, and often they are not offered if diners do not ask for them. In restaurants that do not offer such discounts, a good idea is to order the daily special, or even breakfast, as this is usually cheaper than the lunch or dinner menus.
Another thing to keep in mind is that weekends are usually not only busier, but also more expensive than restaurant offerings during the week. This is good news, especially for retired citizens, whose weektime schedules tend to be relaxed.
A good way to save on restaurant food is also by coupons. Many newspapers will offer restaurant and fast food coupons.
Some restaurants will offer special early-bird discounts or two-for-one menu specials for seniors. You can save up to 20 per cent on meals if you like to eat out during the afternoon instead of the evening, for example.
An important consideration is the age at which restaurants would consider you to be a “senior” citizen. Some would offer lower-priced meals for those older than 50 years, while others would only give discounts to persons who are older than 65.
