The prescription system has a flat fee of £7.10, which can add up with multiple prescriptions. Those who needn't pay include under-16s, pregnant women, students in full time education aged under 19 and people on a range of benefits and tax credits and the over 60s. From 1 April 2009 cancer patients

can also get free prescriptions and they can apply before 24 March for an exemption certificate. If you apply after then you'll need to claim back.

Prescription charges in Scotland are due to be phased out by April 2011, and prices have been cut to £5 per item. On prepayment certificates; Scots can get four months' worth for £17, and 12 months for £48.

Anyone who pays for regular prescriptions should buy a prescription prepayment certificate, which covers all prescription fees for a set period. There are two certificates - one lasts three months for £27.85 and a year long certificate costs £102.50. Go for the first option if you use five or more prescriptions during the three months, and use the second if you use over 15 in a year.

The easiest way to get a certificate is to purchase one online on the NHS Prescription Pricing Authority website. Forms are also available in main Post Offices and some pharmacies.

The certificate is back datable for up to a month. You can ask that it counts as starting up to a month earlier. Ask the pharmacist for NHS receipt (FP57).

The FP57 is helpful if you've applied for but haven’t received your certificate,as you can claim the cash back then too.

A lot of prescribed medications, including painkillers, allergy tablets and dermatology creams, are available over the counter without prescription, and reputable pharmacies, including all Boots stores, will tell you if you ask. This is a good way to save money.
