Over 50s enjoy the latest technology

There are some who believe that the internet, social media and online shopping are the preserve of the younger generation, but research shows that this is not necessarily the case.

Research by over 50s insurer and service provider Saga shows that far from running scared of the latest technological developments, the over 50s are taking them to their hearts.

So music downloads, mobile phones, Playstations and online shopping are not just for youngsters, but older people too. It means they can make the best of online savings too.

Saga interviewed a thousand people aged 50 and over to find that 27 per cent buy items online, 37 per cent send text messages regularly, and 24 per cent even enjoy a gaming session on a Playstation or an Xbox!

In response to the online buying trend Saga has opened its own online travel shop, which will offer travel and leisure opportunities for older people, including flight deals, and offers on hotels, car hire and other travel services and products.

Chief executive at Saga Group, Andrew Goodsell, said: “Flexibility is the key for many of today's over 50s and through Saga Travel, they can now build their own holidays, from a short break in New York, to a round the world cruise on one of Saga's own cruise ships.”

The website doesn’t limit itself to travel, however, and great value tickets for concerts, theatre and sporting events can also be found there.

Although watching events may seem more likely for over 50s, this generation does not hold back when it comes to taking part in adventures. “Experience” packages are very poplar and give over 50s a chance to get their hearts beating a little faster by diving with sharks, learning to fly, or driving a tank.

Use of the latest technology among over 50s continues to grow. Money saving opportunities from shopping online will be most welcome.
