Specialist insurance company, RIAS has found that the over 50s can obtain cheaper car insurance due to their good reputation for careful driving. Driving carefully and efficiently is a good way to

keep motoring costs to a reasonable level, as shown from data taken from a car insurance firm.

Older drivers, it seems, usually keep petrol requirements to a minimum and are generally economical drivers. They are less likely than younger people to have accidents as they tend to concentrate well on the road and watch out for other drivers. They also set a fine example for keeping vehicle carbon emission to the most acceptable level, thus impacting favourably on the environment.

Manager at RIAS Janet Connor said, "Simply put, the over 50s tend not to make many insurance claims and are therefore considered relatively low risk."

It has been found that drivers who drive carefully such as the over 50s usually benefit from an annual saving of 15% in petrol costs. This is taken from figures given by the Provider Show.

The over 50s set a good example to other age groups. They are good, efficient journey planners and regularly check tyre pressure. They do things like remove unused roof racks, drive in the correct gear and accelerate smoothly.

It is always important to shop around online for low cost car insurance and this applies to all age groups. According to Sainsbury's Car Insurance there has been a drop in all insurance premiums of 3.1% in the period betweeen June and December 2008. However, this figure rises for under 25s and over 65s. Nevertheless, the AA paints a different picture proving that prices do vary a great deal and it cannot be emphasised how important it is to shop around. This advice applies equally to the over 50s as to other age groups.

Policy prices can also vary for home, life and travel insurance. To compare policies please read:
