Insurance

Some insurers refuse to cover the over 65s for overseas travel. When you do find a provider it’s important to look at what’s on offer. Although frequent travellers can find that a multi-trip policy covers their needs, older travellers will probably find single trip policies work out cheaper. The Internet, rather than the high street, is the best place to look for travel insurance if you're over 50.

Credit cards

It’s always handy to have a credit card abroad as they are so easy to use, but you need to watch out for the charges. The credit card for the over 50s – Saga - has no loading in Europe but charges 1%

elsewhere. It has an ATM fee of 2% (minimum £2). The good news is that it there is no interest charge on cash withdrawals if you do repay in full.

The best card currently, though is not exclusively for over 50s. It’s the Santander Zero card has no foreign exchange loading anywhere, giving you the best possible exchange rate, and there is no fee for withdrawing cash.

Watch out, though, for its high 27.9% cash withdrawal interest rate, which you have to pay even if you clear the card in full. Nevertheless, as it works out at £2 per month per £100, it is still cheaper than paying interest PLUS the cash withdrawal fees on other cards.

Hotels and Meals

Mercure Hotels is offering a double room for the price of a single for silver savers. Although it won’t save you a fortune, it will leave a handy contribution towards lunch. You can also get two breakfasts for the price of one with the same deal.

In Andalucia in Spain, you can ask for a caña – a small beer – for around €1.50. You will be given a free ‘tapa’ – a small snack. Get a couple of beers and lo – you’ve had a fair lunch!

Paradors are upmarket hotels in Spain. If you are over 60 you can get a 35% discount at some, making them more affordable. These are fine if you want to stay in a Spanish castle or palace, but will still be pricey.
