Free bus travel across England will be available from April 2008 for people aged
over 60.
The National Bus Pass Scheme entitles men and women over 60 to free
off-peak bus travel on all local buses throughout England.
Below you will find answers to frequently asked questions relating to free bus travel and applying for a National Bus Pass.
How do I qualify? You need to be over 60 years.
When and where can I travel? The new national scheme will allow pass holders to travel in off-peak times (9.30am - 11.00pm) on local bus services throughout England.
The scheme does not include long distance coach services such as
National Express who offer discount fares to people 60 plus.
How do I get my free bus travel pass? People with a current bus pass will automatically receive a new national bus pass sent by their council. If you don't have a bus pass you will need to apply for one through your
local council.
Why do I need a new bus pass? The new scheme will be nationwide and it will be necessary to have a nationally recognised bus pass. As of April 2008 there will be a standard bus pass throughout England to make it easier for bus operators and people using the pass.
The bus pass is the same size as a credit card and contains smartcard technology - a small microchip which may be used for electronic ticketing in the future.
Do I have to pay for the card? No.
