Scottish Power introduces a new social tariff to its most vulnerable customers over 60 years of age.

From January, any customer over 60 and receiving welfare benefits will be able to

apply for the tariff - Fresh Start Social Tariff.

According to Scottish Power it will cut energy bills by up to £211 each year and is expected to help an estimated 230,000 customers.

Retail Director for Scottish Power, Willie MacDiarmid, said “The social tariff is an important part of our combined approach to helping our most vulnerable customers."

Mr MacDiarmid added: “We also understand that these are difficult times and we are monitoring the position of the wholesale market closely. If we continue to see a sustained drop in wholesale energy costs then we will reduce prices as soon as we’re able”.

Expenditure for the Fresh Start Social Tariff will be £10 million and forms part of their £240 million outlay over the next three years to deliver a comprehensive range of fuel poverty and energy efficiency initiatives that will help lift customers out of fuel poverty and reduce energy bills.
