Older people who have reached their late 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s should not just give up on their activities and interests. This is even more so for those beset by aching, creaky joints, fatigue and
a general slowing down.
The answer is to fight back with exercise and a fitness program as well as keeping your brain active with interests, hobbies and social activities.
Physical activity together with a healthy diet rich in fruit and vegetables will go a long way to prevent and fight age related illnesses, including osteoporosis, heart disease, obesity (from lack of exercise and slowing down) and diabetes as well as from falls due to loss of balance and strength.
Moderate daily exercise can be incorporated into your daily routine. It's important not to over do it but to be persistent and gradually build up your physical activity. An important point to remember is never to exercise to the point of exhaustion as this can defeat the object and be dangerous too. In fact, you should always stop if feeling out of breath, dizzy or experiencing chest pain.
It's even better if you join an exercise class and get out to meet other people as social well-being is also as important.
The following types of exercise are especially good for those in their middle or twilight years and will hold back old age: Strength exercises will build and maintain muscles. this in turn will speed up the metabolism and keep blood sugar levels healthy too. Exercises to aid balance such as Tai Chi to lower risk of falls and broken bones, and yoga for flexibility and stretching. Why not try a class in pilates, yoga or aerobics? What a great way to do something different, work out your muscles, build up your strength and make new friends at the same time! It's certainly never too late and - as a yoga instructor once said: "In yoga, we don't tell a person by their age, but by their flexibility."
And before beginning any exercise programme remember to speak to your doctor to make sure you are exercising safely within your health zone.
Older people who make sure they keep up their fitness levels with moderate exercise will be amazed at the results! They will find it easier to carry out daily physical tasks and to play with their grandchildren which even some 20-year olds find hard to do!
