When you have been driving for many years and have a good driving record, it is frustrating if you think your premiums may be kept artificially high because you are having to subsidise premiums for younger, less safe drivers.
There are, of course, policies around that serve more experienced drivers better. Help the Aged, Saga and Age Concern all have car insurance policies aimed at drivers with plenty of miles on the clock!
Help the Aged’s Intune motor insurance has no upper age limit and all Intune’s profits go to Help the Aged. Intune’s policies offer discounts of up to 75% if you have at least five years no claims discount (there is also a discount for taking out the policy online). You can also choose only the features you need rather than take out a blanket policy.
Although not specifically for over 50s (except that there is no upper age limit) the fact that Intune’s profits go to Help the Aged will be an incentive for many people.
Saga, of course, is well-known for serving the over 50s. They say they provide affordable insurance prices to reflect a driver’s experience. Specifically, Saga believes that drivers over 50 make fewer car insurance claims, and they aim to reflect that in their lower premiums.
Saga car insurance also offers a discount for buying the policy online (20%), and there is no increase in premium if you choose to pay monthly by direct debit, rather than paying all in one go.
A potentially useful feature of the Saga policy is the Emergency ‘any driver’ cover – this means that anyone with a full licence can drive your car if you have a medical or motoring emergency, as long as you are also in the vehicle.
Age Concern offers car insurance from Fortis Insurance Limited, designed specifically with the needs of the over 50s in mind. Again, there is no upper age limit, so if you're in your 70s‚ 80s or even 90s‚ you can be covered.
It is certainly worth shopping around, and definitely worth getting a quote from insurers like these, who state that they provide
car insurance for over 50s. If you’re stuck on a policy with an insurer whom you’ve been with for years, don’t get delusions of loyalty.
For the best policy deals mix the number of years you’ve been driving with the use of new technology, and get on the internet and see how your driving experience can pay off.
