Free bus travel across England is available to residents of England who are of State Pension age.
The National Bus Pass Scheme entitles men and women to free off-peak bus travel on all local buses throughout England.
Below you will find answers to frequently asked questions relating to free bus travel and applying for a National Bus Pass.
How do I qualify?
In April 2010, the age of eligibility for concessionary travel for women became their pension age. For men it changed to the pensionable age of a woman born on the same day.
The state pension age for a woman is rising over a period of ten years. The earliest age for men and women to get bus passes will increase gradually from 60 in April 2010 to 65 in April 2020. The Government decided that this would be the fairest method, rather than introduce a one-off rise which would leave those currently close to retirement age facing a full five-year delay.
To see if you qualify use the State Pension Age Calculator.
The new national scheme will allow pass holders to travel in off-peak times (9.30am - 11.00pm) on local bus services throughout England.
The scheme does not include long distance coach services such as National Express who offer discount fares to people 60 plus.
How do I get my free bus travel pass?
People with a current bus pass will automatically receive a new national bus pass sent by their council. If you don't have a bus pass you will need to apply for one. You can do that here or apply through your local council.
Why do I need a new bus pass?
The new scheme will be nationwide and it will be necessary to have a nationally recognised bus pass. As of April 2008 there will be a standard bus pass throughout England to make it easier for bus operators and people using the pass.
The bus pass is the same size as a credit card and contains smartcard technology - a small microchip which may be used for electronic ticketing in the future.
Do I have to pay for the card?
No.
I have more questions who should I contact?
